I did not know Larry Don Gillihan personally, but I got acquainted with a good friend of his named Richard Manning, back in the mid 60s, when we used to go watch Richard and the Satellites play at the Club 19, near Alton, Mo. Richard was a very nice guy, and he would always let me and a couple of my band set in during their shows and we loved it. He moved from Jonesboro up here to Hardy several years ago, and we got to be good friends, visiting and talking about those old days of rock and roll. I know Richard wrote a song for Larry Don called That's What I Call A Ball and it was quite popular in England. Richard and I talked about Alley Records, and I told him about our band...the Mystics...recording there in 64 for Joe Lee. There were some pretty darn good records produced there, including Bobby Lee Trammell's Arkansas Twist. I have a copy of the song named Surf Twist, which Larry Don and his Band also recorded at Alley studios back then. It is a smoking good instrumental and our band played it everywhere we went for years.... even into the 80s when I still played. There were certainly some great musicians from Jonesboro and the whole NE Arkansas area, and Larry Don and Richard Manning were two of the best. May they both rest in the peace of Heaven.
